Is preschool necessary?

I'm Canadian and growing up I don't remember this being a thing but when I moved to Texas (my husband  and children are Texan) I discovered it was huge here! It's like every kid goes to school sometimes as young as a year old!?

Is it really that necessary? My son is 3.5 and knows his alphabet upper and lower case, can count and identify his numbers up to 20, knows your basic shapes and colors, and I just started teaching him the various states. I'm a stay at home mom so it feels silly to pay someone to watch my son when I'm home anyways. Am I missing something? Is kindergarten more rigorous these days?

I ended up pulling my son out of his preschool 3 for a myriad of reasons. I'm a full time career mom with 3 kids. I cannot do a part time preschool because there is no one to transport them there an back. It's frustrating. With my first born, I started home preschooling him. He's so friggen smart. He is in kindergarten now and the top of his class. He's reading so well. We did workbooks every single day. We read in this house constantly. Learning is just part of their daily living.

It's insane how much they have to know for kindergarten now. Shapes, colors, letters, numbers, basic writing skills, cutting, glue, and social skills. My kids got their social skills from a home "daycare" family friend, but the rest was my responsibility. I did really well, but I'm not doing the same for my second born. Our schedules are different and my husband can take him to and from a partial day preschool. He is 4 and starting this fall.

So no, it's not necessary, but you will certainly have to work to prepare your child for school.

Kindergarten is crazy now a days. When I went (I'm 30), we learned colors, ate glue and went home lol. Now, they know how to write their name and do simple math and can read sight words. My kids loved preschool, it does help them get into a routine with school, but it isn't necessary. Children don't go and do just fine. It's more what's the preference of the parents. Our 2 year old will be in preschool this fall (he turns 3 in November) it's only a couple hours for 2 days a week but I think he will love it! Our 4 1/2 year old is in preschool and then he leaves his class for a bit for speech as he does struggle with that, he will be in kindergarten this fall (he has July birthday)

When it worked in a preschool we were basically preparing the kids for kindergarten. We were teaching them how to follow the rules and how to listen to instruction. I feel that's very important so my future children will be doing two years of preschool.

Preschool is great for socialization. It also allows the student to gain stamina for when they get to school. Not to mention, preschools do have lessons. They help with literacy development and other life skills. Preschool can be great.

They're teaching things younger and younger these days, it's crazy. If not for the education though, it's at least done for socialization. My nephew is 2 and screams if anyone other than who he is around daily comes near him. My sister just put him in a daycare where the woman running it teaches the children basic sign language and Spanish along with ABCs, numbers, and writing. Hoping he'll break out of his shell and not be so closed off.

My daughter is 4 and absolutely loves preschool. I work FT so she's been in school since she was 6 months old. I don't like to call it daycare because where she attends it's like an actual school. They learn numbers, colors, spanish, math, science the list goes on. They learn how to socialize & what is acceptable/expected in a classroom setting. They have a theme/curriculum every week. My daughter has flourished in ways I couldn't even imagine because of her preschool. They send daily emails with pictures and what they learned that day. I would absolutely recommend preschool, especially if you've been a SAHM & the child has been with you 24/7 since birth. It's good for them! Find a place you are comfortable, start with a morning preschool program! It's usually 3/4 hours in the morning. You'll go through many tours before you find the right place (depending where you live)

Im not for it unless the kid is 4 and up...personally ill be homeschooling & including extracurricular sports artclasses babygym exc... With me there.

Kids are all different with different needs... some learn better in a preschool environment- like my daughter.. I could not teach her myself and she just wanted nothing to do with letters, numbers, reading, etc. Once she was in a classroom with kids her age she started to blossom and really embraced learning. She is in kindergarten this year and it is tough! They expect a lot from these little 5 year olds which has its pros and cons. But if your little one seems to be picking things up rather well in your home and you see no need for preschool then go with your instincts. I know a few kids who never did preschool and were very ready for kindergarten.
