Expired car seat?

Do you know why you shouldn't use expired car seats? Even though if they haven't been in an accident.

The styrofoam inside the car seat can start to break down and make it very unsafe if you were ever in a car accident. You should never never use an expired car seat or a car seat that's been in an accident. Even a tiny fender bender.

As plastic ages, it can get brittle. Even if it looks fine, they're can be major concerns if you would have an accident. There is so much impact and force in an accident, that it might not be safe. 
Also safety standards change. Even the cheapest non-expired carseat still has all the safety standards that are the law. Yes, there might be carseat with above standard features/testing, but the inexpensive ones are still safe. You can get them as little as $50 on Amazon. Money well spent.
Of course everyone hopes that there is never an accident, but if there is, depending on the car insurance, even if it was not your fault, it can be deemed your fault and they won't pay, as it was your neglect. 
Someone in my town had a horrible accident a couple of months ago (someone else ran a red light) and the car seat saved her child's life. The kid was in a coma and had severe injuries, but survived and is recovering well. Car seats save lives. Keep them safe and rear facing as long as possible.

The heat can cause the plastics and such to break down over time (what I've been told), also because safety standards and such change. We used an expired car seat until someone rear ended us, it was my sister in laws, still in the box, sitting in a temperature controlled storage unit. She bought it thinking she would need it, and never used it and forgot about it until she cleaned out the storage unit. Of course we looked at the safety and it was still one of the safest seats.
