Do you think i should shop for what baby needs now , instead of depending on a baby shower ?

I have a one year old daughter and am pregnant with a son. He will need his own car seat , a double stroller , a bouncer , bottles and clothes , diapers and wipes. I'm not sure if I'm getting thrown a shower again but I'm positive if I do it will only be a small amount of people . a part of me doesn't want to depend on other people to provide the things I need for my kid. So I keep telling myself to buy what I need and anything else that's bought is extra. Do you guys think this is a smart approach ?
