What would you do??

Question

My one year old smacked my mother in law in the face when she told him "no". I'm a first time mom and this is new to me since he hasn't done that before until today. What would you do?

Getting in trouble for slapping then you slapping him... monkey see - monkey do... you're  just reinforcing that slapping is ok...

maybe try startling him by grabbing his hand firmly and saying "NO" sternly.

My two year old did this so I picked her up and went and put her straight into a crib and explained to her that we don't smack and she shouldn't smack, that's it's naughty ect;

My sister in law would just tell her boys calmly but firmly "we don't hit" and hold the hand if they kept trying. Her boys are very well behaved at 8 y.o, 6 y.o and 3 y.o. now. I know they used time out but I'm not sure if they used it for something like this. I have a bit of trouble with the logic of spanking or swatting a child to teach them not to hit. 😞

One is too young for time out. And slapping will just teach your baby that doing that is ok. You can say no we don't hit and use diversion. You may want to look into positive parenting solutions.

Seriously? Slapping his hand for slapping someone is just teaching him that hitting is okay. He's only 1, and doesn't have the capacity to understand that hitting someone is mean or that it hurts them. Kids don't develop empathy until later into toddlerhood. You just need to tell him no and redirect him.

Good luck getting a one year old to sit in time out. A slap on the hand would be more effective
