Would you be pissed off?

Question

I am a private patient booked into a private hospital (paying a fortune mind you) but my Obstretician wants me to go to the public hospital next door to do a screening because she is the one on that day.

I'm a bit pissed because my husband just reminded me that I will probably be in a room with other ladies. I had a screening for 5 hours last week at the private hospital and had my own large room with nice food etc.

I'll be so angry if this woman puts me in a shared room with no privacy when I am a private patient at another private hospital.

Plus you aren't being specific about what you mean by "screening". As in an ultrasound? A blood test? A glucose screening?

Ok, so, I can understand that, what with being an obvious foreigner living in India - I get stared at; and it's an unrelenting death-gaze, which has complete strangers crowding into your room when you are doubled over in pain kind of thing (this has already happened to me...) THEN yes, I get it, and yes, you want privacy.

But in Australia... I'm a bit confused. If it's like the NHS back home, no one will stare or give a shit about you. If it's a shared room, there'll be curtains, and people are not going to randomly walk in and take a look at you.

A lot of private hospitals don't have their own equipment, or still rely on public hospitals for certain tests. That's just how it is. I agree, that if you're going private, you shouldn't be wasting public funds like that, and they should have their own equipment. But if the issue is you're too snippy to bunk in for a short amount of time with regular people, maybe you need to calm down a bit...

I don't understand why you would ask a question and then so rudely reply when other people say they think you're over reacting. You asked if we would be pissed, should this happen if u paid for a private... yeah some people weren't very nice to you but you obviously know your answer and it makes you mad that you paid for something private and you had to share a room for one of your appointments. You don't need anyone here to validate your opinion or feelings regarding that. You were hooked to a machine for a few hours and were in the same room as 2 other women, hardly seems like crying over if you can choose to not go there again. Imagine how terrible to be hooked up in a room doing chemo or dialysis with 12 other people and vomiting and feeling like shit.. that would suck.

The health and safety of your child should trump all. A few hours in a *gasp* public hospital(!!!) isn't worth it, to make sure you and your child are healthy?  I just don't understand that mindset. My state doesn't room share at all in public hospitals, but if they did, I'd be okay if it meant extra care for my baby.

Not a lot of hospitals have semi private rooms anymore due to HIPPA laws. It's just for a test. Sounds like you're over reacting about being with some common folks for a bit.

It's one screening, geeze. It's not like she's asking you to give birth in there. If you're that uptight about having to share some space with some commoners (which I highly doubt given privacy regulations), then reschedule and chill out.

I get what some of the other commenters are saying about how this could seem like no big deal and there are much bigger issues to worry about, but if I'm paying for something I sure want to get what I pay for and not something similar but worse. Yes it's true that some people have much more daunting problems during their pregnancy, but that's not the point. If you pay for services at a private hospital where you expect certain things like a single room, that's what you should get. I'm extremely shy about confrontation so I would probably just go with what the doctor is saying, but my advice for someone else would be to see if the doctor will be at your private hospital soon enough that you could just do the scan then. If there is no way to get it done at your private hospital though, I don't know what choice you really have. You can probably find out ahead of time if it will be a shared room at least.
