epidural and water birth?

Can you have an epidural for a water birth? Or is the whole point of water birth to have the baby without it?

That would be pretty dangerous. If you get an epidural, you have to be hooked to monitors so they can track your contractions, as you wouldn't feel them.

I felt my contractions with my epidural, but it's different for everyone. They need to hook you to a monitor to keep track of the contractions and the baby, plus you'd need a catheter because you can't "get up to pee". Also, I think it would be kind of hard to stay up in a birthing pool with limited movement below your waist. But I will say, from what I've seen from water births, it's a natural pain relief in itself! Good luck mama, choose what's best for you and baby. ❤

I asked this question too and my friend laughed at me and said you'll drown!! Once I told my sister I was pregnant I asked her (she's a midwife) and she had a wee giggle too and said no, one or the other. I didn't think it was a stupid question. I don't see why you can't labour in the pool then get an epidural when it gets worse. But hen she explained that you need to stay at home until you are in active labour. Not sure about America, but in Britain they will send you home until you are around at least 4cm dilated. Unless there are problems obviously. xx

You can't have an epidural and a water BIRTH. But my local hospital allows you to labor in a bathtub until you are ready to receive your epidural (and then you're in the bed for the rest of labor) or until you are actively pushing of you choose to not receive an epidural. They won't allow you to actually give birth in the tub.

I believe epidural equals hospital bed. As they won't allow you in water with no feeling in half ur body. Water birth is generally used to alleviate some of the pain for natural

I don't know about whee you live but we don't have hospitals with water bathing stations.
So, any home birth is done at home...where there isn't a doctor...so no epidural.  :)
