Should a tenant have to pay to move out if landlord isn't fixing problems inside the house?
Just need some advice on what you guys think. My husband is in the Navy and we live on base where we are stationed. We moved in to our house a year ago and our lease is up next week. The day we moved into the house we noticed a leak on the counter in the kitchen. The leak went down the cabinets, down the wall and onto the counter. We were told it would be fixed. They came back patched our roof a few days later. Throughout the year we have had several other leaks in the house (in both bathrooms). And there is even mold in our storage attached to our carport. We have called numerous times and they've come to "patch our roof". The last time they came about a month ago, the maintenance guys said our house needed a new roof, new cabinets, they needed to replace the drywall in the kitchen and both bathrooms and repaint. They said they would have contractors come out and give them an estimate. Well we've called for updates and no one has come to give them an estimate. I called today and talked to a manager and went back and forth with her about just letting us open to another open house on base. That way they can take there time fixing our current house for the next tenants. I am due with our baby girl in July. I don't want to be in a house where they are ripping up the kitchen and barrooms and who knows how long it will take for them to actually complete everything. The manager finally decided we could move to another house. She said we could sign the lease this Friday but we'd have to turn in our other keys Monday so we don't get charged extra. We did paint the our living room and our bedroom. But we aren't going to have enough time to paint it back in just 3 days. The housing lady said they are "accommodating us" but I really don't think are doing us favors. It's just the right thing to do as a landlord to fix something properly or let the tenant move to a different house. Do you guys think it would be right for them to charge us a fee to re-paint the walls back white? We also won't have time do do a deep clean so I'm afraid hey are gonna charge us once we get into the other house. Our house isn't dirty but they've charged people in the past for not pulling out heir fridge and stove and sweeping behind it. What do you guys think?
