pelvic floor/kegel exercises?

Has anybody had experience with pelvic floor exercises/kegels? This is what my doctor recommended, and I am curious to see if anyone has done this consistently and if it helped.

Usually, this is ill advised; though there are a few exceptions.   Most women with vaginismus have hypertonic (overly strong) pelvic floor muscles not hypotonic (overly weak) ones.

If your muscle tone is too low (hypotonic) then kegels would be helpful.  They help strengthen the muscles.  But, if your muscle tone is too high (hypertonic), kegels will not help at all.  You need to learn to relax the muscles in that case.  If that is the case, I'd suggest googling and trying to learn to do pelvic floor drops, which help you learn to relax them.

Either way, the absolute best thing I did was seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist.  They can evaluate your muscle tone and make more specific recommendations.

NOOOOO! IT CAUSES MORE HARM even though just relax and do kegals are the only thing people can recommend (lack of education on the matter[all pelvic disorders are not the same like they say they are]). Your muscles are too tight, which is why we have difficulties with penetration and are in pain. Our goals are to relax and keep the muscles relaxed. The only time you should kegel is the first time you start to learn how to identify the muscles.. as you tighten everything will tense up deep breathe in.... and the main focus is the slow exhale following the relaxation of all the muscles.. the point where you are out of air and feel a sense of relaxation/relief is the the key... that my friend is the muscles finally relaxing like they are supposed to before they snap back to tightness.  You want to focus and try to get that sensation with only breathing(no tightening/kegel) to recreate the relaxation for recovery.
