What do you think is an appropriate punishment for cheating in school?

Say a kid cheats in school on a core based activity, like a math or history test, and it's their first offense. What punishment from the school do you think would be most appropriate for them?

My school gives out a 0 on the first offense and then detentions/suspensions on the next offenses as well as parent/teacher conference.

As an academic, I understand the severity of this issue. The stealing of intellectual property cannot be handled lightly and this should be instilled from grade school. This warrants a definite 0 to be factored into the student's average at the very least and parental guidance for minors. Detention and suspension for repeat offenders and older students. I am not opposed to full blown prosecution for this type of thievery in college students. It takes more effort to cheat than to actually learn and produce the material.

When I was in high school I was doing the International Bacceloreate (IB) program and cheating was very very serious. For us when someone cheats you can technically affect the grade curve of thousands of students for that subject. If you were caught cheating on an assignment or test that was for IB (certain assignments had to be sent off and graded by IB markers) then you could lose your IB diploma. A kid in my class cheated on the history final and he lost the whole diploma. He still got his standard high school diploma from the school but when you've applied to university as an IB applicant and suddenly don't even get graded on any subjects it really screws you up.

I'm all for that. You don't cheat because it can affect other people if you're on a grading curve. It's also dishonest so yes they should get a 0 and detention and it'd be a good idea for parents to be involved. After high school cheating often becomes more serious. I'm in vet school and cheating here can and will result in expulsion from the DVM program. If you cheat and lie in your adult life it can have criminal consequences too. So yes schools should take cheating seriously so that you can teach kids that cheating is wrong and has consequences now before it can really affect their future.

It really depends I guess. Some cheating can be worse than others. Cheating in high school probably shouldn't be as serious as cheating in college.

My issue it that people in college are more likely to get expelled from school for cheating than sexual assault or rape. Schools unfortunately take cheating more seriously even though it might not cause harm to other people. Of course a student should be punished, but maybe to a slight lesser extent or given warnings.

I’m a teacher. When I give my students a test. I say “this is a test there is no talking, if I hear talking I make them bring there paper up and they get a permanent 0 for that test and won’t be allowed to retake it. I’ve already done it twice this year I teach high-school I shouldn’t have to tell them to be quiet but they talk anyways

If I recall, when I was in high school the policy was that first offense was automatic 0 on the assignment. Second offense was automatic failing grade in the class. Third was probably parent-administration conference and automatic failing grade in the class. Honestly, I only remember the first two because those were the two that were mentioned the most and I had enough common sense to not cheat or plagiarize on assignments. My high school also emphasized the fact that if you go to college, it's a lot more zero tolerance for plagiarism so you should learn to summarize and cite your sources now rather than later.

If a child does it once give them a 0 but if they repeatedly cheat it could be a sign of a learning disability or physiological disorder so they should be tested for those things. Most teachers and staff always think a child acts out or does things like that because they are bad. But bad children aren't necessarily bad there's always an underlying reason that may not be obvious

In college you can be expelled and if you plagiarize an essay or report you can even face criminal charges. 
Now.. I have to agree that getting a zero is completely fair... However... Cheating also can cause the person whose answers were stolen to get in trouble as well because you can't always tell which of them cheated... You may be punishing the wrong person. I had that happen to me before in highschool but they let us both retake the test because the other person said i was the one that cheated when I didn't even know he was copying my paper. In the end I scored an A and he scored like a 50 and that's how the teacher knew and dude ended up with a zero and iss for the trouble he put everyone through.

If we're talking primary school/lower high school, I think it's a bit much to give a zero unless the entire test/assignment is copied. I would deduct marks where known and necessary and probably give a detention, as well as letting the parent know. Sure, second offence give them a zero, they should know by then. 
Obviously upper high school and especially university, it's just a straight up zero, no questions asked.

When i was in elementary school, i forgot to do my homework and asked a classmate to help me on it. She refused to help me and told me to just copy her paper and i got in trouble for cheating and our parents were called to the school. For a worksheet. We had to stay in the office the entire time, out of class, until it was resolved (i got all the blame). It was so stupid and overblown. All i learned was dont trust bitchy ass classmates and that 0 tolerance actually means no one gives a shit but will waste your time for the trouble.
