Help, Starting the Pill

Hey guys! I will go pick up my birth control tomorrow, but I have zero idea how to start it. I don't know if I am supposed to wait to be on my period to start it. The only thing my doctor told me was that it wouldn't start working until 2 weeks later. I am guessing that is because I started my period 2 weeks ago? Maybe it is connected to my period? I am also confused about the sugar pill, because I know that it is that week that you get your period, but does that mean it will give me a whole new cycle? Or am i supposed to take the sugar pills right when i get my period? Also, any advice on how to take it? Share your knowledge please! Thanks in advance!
