getting induced?

Question

I'm currently twenty weeks pregnant and I'm kind of confused about how the doctor decides whether or not to induce labor. Do you request it? Do they recommend it? Does there have to be a medical reason/problem with the child to get induced? How do they pick the date? 
Please share stories about your own induction and how the doctor came about it.

With my first and second I was induced at 40.2 and 39 weeks because of their size. Both were 8lbs 9oz. It was only 3 hours and 5 hours of labor. I had heavy bleeding with those deliveries so with my third son they induced at 39 weeks to make sure they were prepared for the bleeding. He was only 7.1 so size had nothing to do with it.

I was induced because the size of my baby and they said I had a lot of excess fluid. Was induced at 38w. Had to have a csection.

I was 9 days past my due date. I was given a choice to be in induced. If I said no, I'd have to come to the doctors office every day for monitoring. The doctor said the risk of stillbirth and complications go up the longer we wait, so I trusted her judgement and got induced. She called the hospital to try to get me in sooner, but the hospital was booked. There was no emergency medical reason to induce me sooner.

I was induced with my first at 42 weeks because my body wasn't progressing on its own and it is dangerous for baby to stay in too long. If you get induced your contractions are much worse.

I've been induced twice. The first was an emergency induction at 38 weeks because my amneotic fluid was dangerously low, I had potocin and they broke my water. My second I also had low amneotic fluid but It ended up staying at an acceptable level so I asked my dr if I could be induced at 39 weeks, she agreed and I was induced at 39 weeks and 5 days, this time My baby did not react right to the potocin so my dr stopped it and just broke my water. Both times My water was broke around 8am and My little boys were born at 1:15 pm and 1:57pm. I was in active labor for 5 hours.

I think most drs will schedule inductions so that everyone can prepare appropriately and it's less of a surprise. My dr will induce healthy patients that are able to give birth vaginally  at 39 weeks but they have to be dilated and showing progression on their own.

I was induced with my first 2. Most doctors have their own view on inducing. My doctor allows the mother decide as long as they are 39weeks.  Then we usually dicuss certain days that week to check in hospital.

I was induced at 39 weeks because the fluid around the baby was too low. I had to have weekly ultrasounds from 32 weeks on because I wasn't measuring any bigger and the fluid was low.
