Why am I on my period while on birth control?

Okay so a while back in February my doctor forgot to sign off for Xulane, my brith control patch. Im on my last one currently and just now my period started. I was spotting for a couple days, but it just suddenly exploded. I have unprotected sex on 2/1/2017 and my period started the next day on 2/2/17 so i know im not pregnant thats for sure.
