Nanny advice? 😩😳🤷🏼‍♀️

Question

After a less than comforting run w a licensed family daycare, we are considering hiring a nanny until my school year ends in June.  We've gotten a number of applicants on care.com and I'd love any advice from parents that have done this before!  Especially regarding the business end of it.  Should we design a contract?  Handle payment as an employee or contractor? Liability concerns?  We are only considering experienced providers.

I am a nanny! I have been doing this for over 15 years. Having been through this with many families I feel it is important to talk with each candidate over a phone call and if you are interested them you meet with them with or without your husband then when you narrow it down to 2 canidates have them meet with your husband and child and see how they interact. I would ask for references and also do a back round check with car record if you are wanting them to drive your child to activities. Also i feel its important to draw a contract so you and any potential candidate understand all rules and what is to be expected from them. Have it signed by the person you choose and you so it's all legal some things to include in contract  I.e. how many hours a week, how much is the pay, any vacation included say 2 weeks paid any sick days included, also if you live where I am we  get alot of snow in winter how are you going to handle snow days are they paid not paid. Is there space for them to stay if you need them to come in to work during these storms. Do you need them for overtime on certain occasions. Do you need them for overnights, as for watching your child is their any other work that you would want them to do like laundry, cleaning, food shopping. Will you provide a car or if they need a car for activities or for errands. If you have any questions please ask! Good luck with your search !!!

I am a nanny and you should NOT ever hire a nanny as an independent contractor. Bad idea, and a tax no no. Don't do it. You need to hire them as an employee. I've attached screenshots from care.com...  trust me, my employer looked into it and said it's not good to do that so I'm glad I am an employee! Also, yes to the contract, helps keeps everyone on the same page.

I've been with care.com for a long time. They offer something called "HomePay" that makes all the tax stuff worlds easier for you and for the caregiver you choose. Always look for caregivers with their background check and driving record readily available for you. Good luck!
