LBGT 101: What does "intersex" mean?

Question

Intersex is a term used to describe someone whose anatomy or genetics at birth do not correspond to the typical expectations for either girl or boy.

Women have XX chromosomes and men have XY chromosomes, but about 1 in 2000 babies are born intersex, or indeterminate. Sometimes this is evident at birth, but other times it isn't apparent until puberty.

Performing surgery on intersex babies is a controversial topic; it's more accepted to wait until a child is old enough to decide their own gender identity.

Yes. Thank you for mentioning this! I've met people who are total assholes about this. They think that intersex is when a guy changes into girl's clothes and back again on a whim (thats closer to trans, and a whole different rant). These people are unwilling to learn about it before spouting nonesense, and they refuse to listen when someone calls them out. They do more damage to intersex kids than society as a whole does because they are so specific in their insults and don't consider anyone's feelings than their own. Ok, I'm stopping here so I don't write a book. Yet.

Again with the exclusive language. Females are XX. Women can have whatever chromosomal structure they bloody well please. Trans women are women too. Same for men.

except that intersex people, are not inherently LGBT!!! a lot of intersex people do not want to be included in the LGBT community!! it's good to inform people on what it means to be intersex, but you also need to inform them on the fact that a lot of them dont want to be labeled LGBT.
