Which camera would you chose?

My husband went out and bought an expensive "tough", waterproof camera even though I had my heart set on a DSLR that takes professional quality photos. He thinks the one he bought is better because it makes a better family camera and we have a little one on the way.

If you don't have the time to devote to really learning how to use a good dslr camera, then do with the point and shoot. Unless you get one of the more expensive dslr's, the quality won't be insanely better then the point and shoot anyway.

DSLRs are plenty tough. It was rainy in all of these photos I took during our trip to Alaska. They sell expensive rain covers, but I used a plastic bag and my wife's scrunchie. Not waterproof, but they're tough enough for most things.

I'm a photographer. Go DSLR. Canon makes good options for beginners. Once you get the hang out of it, you'll save money on professional photos because you can take a lot of them yourself.

I say go for DSLR.  I use my iPhone as a point and shoot and my understanding some phone camera quality is similar to a point a shoot.  DSLR is expensive but better quality, you'll need to learn how to and etc to get the most of it and probably need to invest in tripod and maybe extra lenses (if you plan to take the hobby to a new level).  We started out with a beginner package Nikon D300 deal the hubby found on Groupon (it was refurbished, but works perfectly for us).  Good luck!

I just got the sony a5100 for my birthday and I LOVE it. It's in between a point and shoot and a DSLR. I did alotttt of research on cameras and what I was looking for in one before making my purchase! I'm super happy cause I get great quality photos I a small package!

Think of which one will fit in your diaper bag easier. DSLR cameras are great, but they're large and cumbersome. If your baby/kid does something adorable, how long is it going to take to set up your camera and lens out of the bag? 
An easy point and shoot camera is a great go to for packing to take anywhere, but you have to consider if at that point your phone camera is just as good.

I bought the Sony DSC- RX100M III for my husband before our African safari and it is amazing. The zoom captured some professional quality photos of the animals from far distances (even when they were moving), and it's super compact which is so important for travel (or for diaper bags!). I also have a Canon DSLR that I pretty much never use now, despite the fact that it has a bigger lens for farther distances and the picture quality is slightly better, because it's so bulky that it's just not practical for anything we do. If you are only going to take pictures of your baby around your house/yard, then a DSLR is great, but if you're going to be taking pictures of your baby while on vacation or on the go at parks, etc, I'd highly recommend a more compact camera. Sony makes some powerful little compact cameras so I'd definitely take a look!
