Ob vs midwife?

My first labor was with an ob in a hospital and it was not a fun experience. I loved my ob, but I was not at all comfortable, I was completely allergic to the epidural that I wasn't even sure I wanted, it was done wrong so I still felt pain, and now have chronic pain in my back because of it. I was not allowed to get up, and I was forced to lay in a bed for 20 hours. It just wasn't a fun experience at all.

Because of this experience, and because I am now pregnant with my second and probably last baby, I am considering going with a midwife, and not being in the hospital environment at all, but I don't have much knowledge about it. Anyone that has had experienced both? Which did you prefer? What was your experience with a midwife?

I prefer a midwife, I have worked with several throughout the years and I have never had a problem with any of them. I have worked with an ob a couple of times and it wasn't the care I was looking for.

I had my first with an OB in a hospital. I hated the whole experience and decided to look into different options with my second. I found a midwife and loved her. I had a out of hospital water birth and it was amazing! I loved everything about it. Now having my 4th baby and planning to have another midwife/water birth.

Midwifery can be a great option. Research your local midwives and the birth options they offer. You can be attended at some hospitals by midwives, at a freestanding birth center, or at home. Each midwife is an individual and some are more nutty crunchy and some are more medical. If you want insurance to cover the care, you'll most likely need to find a CNM, certified nurse midwife. I'm in PA and we had to pay for the home births out of pocket, but that might differ in your state. Read Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth. It's a great book on natural childbirth and might give you a clear idea of what you want for your next birth. Good luck!

Go to a birth center and get yourself a midwife! It is so much more laid back and free. I love it!

Midwife! I had my son at a hospital with a midwife and all of my appointments were amazing. Nothing was ever pushed on me, even when I was 4 days over my due date and it was just very relaxed. However once labor started it was a very typical hospital birth which was frustrating to me, I will be looking into birth centers for my next one
