Magic Merlin Sleep Suit transition?

Question

The merlin suit was amazing for my son. At 3M he went from 4hr stretches to 8. Now my dr said he needs to stop using it because he's supposed to start rolling. We tried not using it once and he screamed and cried for an hour and we gave in and put him back in it. Anyone have any suggestions on how to wean him from this magical sleep suit??

Oh how we loved our Merlin sleep suit. It was amazing for our girl too!! We transitioned out of it right around the start of march. I think the move was slightly easier for us because we never napped her in it, and she napped in a grobag sleep sack. So when we switched to the same sleep sack at night it was such a huge deal. She does rub her face a bit more now and flail more, but she did get used to it quickly. Then a week later she got her first teeth and then her first cold lol. So it was rough for different reasons.

I didn't take him out of the sleepsuit until I saw my LO roll over in it one morning. It's really hard for them to do it, so I was pretty shocked. We went to a halo swaddle with his arms out after that for a couple weeks, then to the sleep sack. The suit to the swaddled middle was easy peasy. Going to the sack was/is harder. Takes some time to get used to it, but my LO is so mobile now he can move around and make himself comfortable.

Loved the Merlin. I did not stop using it until I actually witnessed my son roll over in it one night on the baby monitor. The advice that I was given was to go cold turkey and ride out the slight regression that follows. So we did that the next night. We put him in a basic sleep sack. It was a little rough. But it was to be expected. Because it's not just the Merlin transition we were dealing with, it was also the fact that he was rolling around his crib all night waking up, waking us up. I was told it could take a week or so for the rolling/waking phase to smooth out. And that they actually discover that they like sleeping on their stomachs or sides and end up sleeping better that way. Three nights have passed since we stopped with the Merlin and things have already smoothed out and he totally happily sleeps on his side now. We still use Merlin for naps as he doesn't roll during daytime sleep and he's always supervised then anyway. Babies brains work differently for day sleep vs night sleep so I'm not worried about confusing him. Plus it helps him nap well during this rough nighttime phase. I know this wasn't actually advice but hopefully my experience helps you know that you'll absolutely get through it.
