Question

Poll: Is it tacky to recommend/suggest/give an option for people donate to an organization say The Birthday Party Project, or a no Kill Animal Shelter like Operation Kindness rather than give my daughter gifts for her first birthday?

***Bonus Question does it make someone feel obligated to do both? Even though is a "bring a gift" or donate. They still might not want to show up empty handed?***

(Obviously before everyone's panties get ruffled. We aren't expecting/requiring people to bring gifts, but we have already started to get questions about what folks should get her.)

Its all in the wording, just say shes  blessed with  more than she  needs,  so in lieu  of a gift shes asking to donate to her  charity this and that... something like that

I think it's a good idea. Depending on her age it really doesn't seem like it can effect her. I'm sure people will still bring her a little gift if they donate I'm sure..

Maybe to satisfy those people put a $15 limit on the present idk.

I would do it if I were "well off" or really didn't need anything extra in my house. Especially if she's still a baby, why not??

Honestly I don't think I would have had an issue with it as a child. I used to think it was cool to put $1 in cups of homeless people or street performers. I used to beg my parents for extra change just to do it lol so I think if the child was involved in the "hand off"  for the donation I think it'd be pretty special

Not a bad idea.   For my youngest first birthday I will be making an invitation something along the lines of bring her your favorite childhood book in place of a card and write her a letter not to be opened until she is 18.   All letters will go in a box for her 18th birthday.  By then she will have lost some of these loved ones maybe so soon that she won't even remember them.

I think your idea is great as well.

Kids do this all the time for one of our local animal shelters. I think it's great they want stuff to donate vs. Things for themselves.

Great idea! Honestly I have seen kids do this for all birthdays not just the first. The shelter near us always posts pictures of kids coming in on their birthday with a bunch of food and a check. You could ask for physical donations too, if they don't want to come empty handed they could bring a leash, a dog bed, blankets, cleaning supplies, food, litter etc. and you can drop it off.
