Will you make your child do chores?

Question

My son is 22 months and he helps with unloading the dishwasher. Recently we've started having him pick up his toys in the living room before bedtime. These aren't necessarily "chores" but once he gets a little older we will make him do chores. He helps a lot around the house and really enjoys it! Growing up I was made to do chores so I see absolutely nothing wrong with making your children help around the house and do chores.

I'm a preschool teacher with 2 degrees in child development, and I encourage parents to let their child assist with, or be in charge of certain tasks around the house and in day to day activity. They gain life skills, confidence, problem solving, motor skills, asking for help and coping and regulating with frustrating circumstances or road blocks.

My 3 year olds stack their own chairs, get their own plates and forks, sweep the floors, clean the tables and even putting on their own cot sheets. They LOVE doing it and once they master it it's like the biggest light starts to shine within them.

My friends 4 year old loves cleaning 😂 he's always like "oh no! The floor is dirty! Mom we gotta clean it!" Or "uh oh! I spilled water! *viciously cleans it up with his shirt* ohhh 😲 mom my shirt is dirty we gotta put it in the laundry!!" He says it like it's an emergency situation. Everyone stop what you are doing!

And he pushes around toys and goes "I'm vacuuming!"

My boys are 5 and 4 and 1. The big kids feed the dog and cat and take them out (backyard). They put their laundry down the chute, help with the dishes, fold socks, help with the laundry, clean their rooms and make their beds, and pick up the house. My big kid also helps me wipe down the stairs and makes his lunch for school. This is just basic living in my house

I don't have a chore chart or anything but my kids (9 and 6) help around the house. They help pick shoes up and tidy up the living areas and they clean their room. I'm not a maid to clean up after everybody. And when they where littler I use to only make them clean their room and one day one of them said mommy can u clean our room? You're faster and you like to clean!. That was the straw that broke my back. At that point I realized they where spoiled n I was exhausted doing everything so nope they can help keep house clean and fold laundry.

My mother would leave a list of things to do before we could play. We would sweep, vacuum, do dishes, collect fire wood, dust, mop, and so on. When I worked in daycare my students had chores, such as set the table, clean up toys, put their cots together for nap and put them away, wipe the table, throw away their lunch garbage, etc.  They always wanted to be the helper! It was a big deal to them, and they found pride in what they could accomplish. My son will also have chores. I agree that helping put toys away is a great way to start.
