Can going back to your ex work out?

Ok so I dated this guy in college. Right before my senior concert and before our two year anniversary he broke up with me...through text! 🙄🙄 a lot of things were left unclear. About a year after he ended it we met up and talked and cleared the air. Now it's 4 ( or 5 ) years since we've spoken and I recently found out he lives in Oklahoma two hours away from me. I just think it's crazy how we both ended up in oklahoma. I mean I know for me Oklahoma is the last place I would have thought to live. So I messaged him to basically say how it's crazy we're both in the state. He said he comes to my city all the time and the next time he does he will let me know and we can do something. So I'm just seeking advice on how to approach this in case this actually happens. I'm not trying to set myself up for failure a second time.
