How important is chemistry in a relationship?

So the other day I read an article about the importance of chemistry in a relationship, basically telling the story of a couple who had everything else going for them, but didn't really have a spark so to speak. This didn't end well.
I found this surprising because that isn't something that usually lasts or ends being important in the long term. Wouldn't things like the amount of shared goals and values, ease of communication, and complementary strengths and flaws be more important throughout? Keep in mind, these people were compatible in lots of other ways, so it wasn't the case of attraction wearing off to reveal nothing underneath.
What do you think and why?
