Do/Will you punish your child for whining?

Do/Will you punish your child for whining about unnecessary things?

Depends on what your definition of "punish" is but yes I do & my two year old does amazing. All I have to say is his name, tell him that's enough or start counting to 3 and he stops.

I don't punish for it but I tell them I don't do whining cut it out. But my kids r older. 9 and 6. They r old enough to understand. If they r whining for something I take it away. I can't stand whining drives me nuts. B a big kid and ask me for it.

I wouldn't call it punishing, I would say it's more of correcting. Remind them that it's not okay to whine and that if we would like something then we use our words. If the whining continues, then there is a timeout warning. Usually that does the trick for me and I hardly have to actually put them in timeout. But occasionally, timeouts happen for whining and then after we talk about why whining is not okay or appropriate and I remind them how I know it's hard not to sometimes

Research the reasons why babies and kids whine. Sometimes it legit. I still tell them to stop and readjust what's going on. Otherwise it's manipulation. I mimic their voice and behavior. Even a toddler will adjust their voice and attitude immediately bc they don't like it when you join in.  I have often been heard saying I can not speak to you until you use your real voice you are hurting my ears.

Right now at 20 months I just ignore her when she whines. I don't want her to think it gets her attention. Once she's older and understands what I'm saying more I'll tell her she needs to stop. But I'll probably still just ignore it.

My son is grown and off at college. I was a young single mother. Pouting and whining is a negative behavior which needs to nipped in the butt right away. Children learn manipulation skills at an extremely young age, pouting and whining are two fine examples of manipulation. In their mind they have figured out somewhere at sometime that all they have to do is pout or whine to get what they want or get their way. If given into this behavior can, and mostly like, will lead to the child having a sense of entitlement. 
Too many parents are so worried that they are not doing the politically correct thing when it comes to raising their kids. That's the worst damn thing ever! Kids need structure and discipline. Period! Enough with babying their asses. 
Realize that someday you have to present them to the real world and introduce your work you put into one human being. So when you release them into the real world, people will say "God her/his parents did a pretty shitty job raising that kid. They must be real f*cking proud." OR there's the alternative. That all depends on how you raise the child, starting at an early age. 
Be tough on them. Don't pamper their asses once they out grow pampers. You are their parents, not their friends- you'll be their friend later on in life if you did your job right! Don't worry about hurting their feelings. Cuz it's a big world out there and they will get their feelings hurt plenty, they better get used to it. 
Bad behavior should always be sternly addressed.!

By punish, it could simply be ignoring or a stern talking to. I don't have kids yet but it's how I react to my nieces and nephews whining.

We dont really punish for whining unless its a i didnt get my way kind of thing and there is a tantrum but she doesnt throw tantrums with us she does silent treatment. She gets punished when she doesnt do what she is told to do. Now when she has her tantrums which are with her mom and stem from her mom at drop offs we let her cry it out and when she is ready to talk we talk to her to let her know her feelings are validated and ,usually being she misses her mom and her mom tells her stuff before drop off to make her feel bad for being with us, its ok to feel upset or sad but she will see her mom when she goes back with her. She has stopped with those mostly because she gets picked up from school now and her mom just not being around in general on her time so she has gotten used to not seeing her and doesn't react to it anymore. She does it with me when im not there because of work and she will get sad or upset because she wants me but her dad just talks to her and tells her its ok that she feels that way and that i will be back so she will get to see me.

No and yes. What I do is I tell her one time that I don't understand her when she's whining and that I need her to use her big girl voice. I taught her the difference between a whining voice and a big girl voice. I do use 123 magic though, so if I tell her one time to use her big girl voice and she doesn't use it and continues to whine, then I count her behavior (each time she whines I can't one, two, three) and if she gets to three she will go in time out. It usually does not get to three.

Well I'm not a mom myself but I "babysit" 3 girls 15 hours a week and if they whine I just tell them that it won't help them achieve their goals and that they have to get over it. (It depends on what it is about and so on, and maybe I'll give it to them later that day when they deserved it.)
