insurance covering breast pumps?

I had my first daughter in 2011 and it seems like after I had her I remember hearing about health insurance covering the cost of breast pumps. Did that actually happen? I'm only 10w with #2 and forgot to ask at my first appointment. Thanks in advance!

Insurance is required to provide them for free now. However, depending on your insurance, you may need a prescription for your doctor. I will get the prescription after delivery and pick it up from the hospital parmach before we go home!

My insurance is going to cover mine. Just check with your insurance company, I believe all insurance companies are required to cover them now.

Thanks for the info ladies! This may be a dumb question, but where would you go to "fill your prescription"/get the pump? Again, it's been a while but with my last I only shopped for them at baby stores.

My insurance only covered one specific brand and model.

Yup. You get a script from your doctor and take it to a participating provider. My insurance covers $180 of the pump if I get more expensive I'll just pay the difference.

My insurance through my employee covers a particular list of pumps through various providers. They just will not send it out until 30 days prior to my due date. I get to choose one they cover or pay upcharges to get bigger sets with more accessories or get a prescription to rent hospital grade one (but this is not necessary for individual use - hospital grade ones are for multiple users).

Most will. But you often can't get it until late in your pregnancy. Definitely call your insurance company. They may expect a prescription.
