Well the number 7, in biblical terms, was a sign of wholeness and completion. So to be called a '666' was an insult meaning you were short of being complete. And if you take the original Greek translation and the name of Emperor Nero (The Roman emperor during the revelation) his name adds up to '666'. He was referred to as 'The beastly emperor' so some people believe this is qhere the 'Sign of the beast' term came from.
