Is College for Everyone?

Question

In my archaeology class we were talking about how colleges just let in anybody, just about now, and how it's getting harder for professors to grade things at a "college level" because they get people that just aren't college material. It's kind of "dumbing down" college to where people scrape by that don't really deserve it or want to be there.
I don't think that college is for everyone. I don't think you should need a degree to do well in life. I think the assumption that college is for everyone is ridiculous. People who don't want to go to college or just aren't college ready should be able to work their way up with skills they learn at their job in an apprenticeship way like is available in other countries. If we keep pushing absolutely everyone into college, it's going to get to the point where you need a phd to do anything.

No, college isn't for everyone but everyone can benefit from secondary education. Whether it's a trade School to be a mechanic or going to Harvard.

College isn't for everyone, but continuing your education either in vocational school or through college is. I haven't met a person who couldn't use more education.

If someone can't make the right standards then of course they shouldn't pass? By letting everyone pass well, that can be rather dangerous in some areas. There's a reason some courses are so difficult, when you have people wanting to be doctors, psychologists, lawyers etc they NEED to reach incredibly high standards to do their jobs properly, by allowing anyone to pass that you get people who have no idea what they're doing in control of other people's lives. Not everyone can make it, if you can't do it, there's still plenty of other paths to take, it's not the end of the world.

I think it's a shame that some companies are so pushy on graduates. I think they miss some great opportunities when they request that only graduates should apply. Let's say you complete a uni degree in 4 years and the company employed another individual the same age at the beginning of this said 4 years. The person who started from the bottom working up the chain would in theory be much more qualified for the job in comparison to a graduate who complete a 'random' degree (meaning any degree, not specific for the role).. yet the company stipulate only graduates to apply for higher positions etc. The same with the military. To become an officer ranking (uk) you've to be a graduate or equivalent... however the ground boots are capped under an officer and probably are more qualified, just by exposure, than somebody straight out of uni x

No, I don't think college is for everyone. But I like what others have said, everyone could stand to be more educated or learn more.

My husband didn't even go to high school. He's very successful and very smart. He has many skills that help him be successful without schooling. But he could benefit from an English class and probably some math.

He has terrible grammar, spelling, and messes up words occassionally. He didn't really learn English until he was 6, it was spoken occasionally around him before that but not enough.

Sorry I was rambling. Education is a good thing and everyone could benefit from furthering their education. But college isnt always necessary to be successful.

Too many people are getting to uni and its making degrees useless. Archaeology is a perfect example of the lowest paid profession in the country! You need a degree to do it professionally but they pay a pittance!! Its impossible to survive in this day and age!

I believe education is a basic human right with all entitled to it. People naturally differ in the standard to which they are able to learn.
 But it makes no one less entitled to reach their maximum potential in school and in life

while i think college should be open to those who want it for free i also dont think we should need it to be able to succeed. trades are very important skills to have in society and we shouldnt need a degree and have to take useless classes that have nothing to do with our trade to get there either.
