Opinions on wearing a taweez? Is it ok?

As my OH is a Sufi, they are allowed to wear a taweez for protection. However, I am aware most Muslims wouldn't wear one as its not allowed.

I just wondered what everyone's opinions were on the subject and if they too wear one.

From what I know, it's not haram to wear a taweez. It is better to pray for protection, but I do believe it's acceptable. There's just a lot of controversy around the taweez in general, especially when they're handed out as cures by voodoo 'specialists'.

My personal take on taweez is that it's better to just pray to Allah directly. When there is doubt over something, I prefer to back away. It isn't wrong, I'm just a bit uneasy with it myself.

It isn't shirk, as long as the person is relying on the words of Allah in the taweez. Not the necklace in itself.

Some people say its shirk, because ur depending on that rather in relying on Allah. 
Allah knows best.- is the taweez ur talking about, has something written on it or is it a black thread given by someone? 
If it's for nazar(evil eye) just read the ayat ul kursi and the 4 quls

I've been raised that it's haraam by my parents but as I got older and heard more discussion of such things I think it really depends on intention. A family member gave me one for my car, but not with the idea that it alone will protect me, rather more so as a reminder of Allah and to ask for His protection.
