baby sleeping too much ?

Every time my mother in law comes over baby is sleeping. It's usually because he has just been fed and is finally asleep ! She always sits there and shakes her head about how he sleeps too much and it's not good. Is it ever a bad thing that a baby sleeps ?! He is only 3 and a half weeks old.. yes he sleeps a lot I thought they were supposed too ?

Babies can sleep too much, if they're unresponsive or not gaining weight. But if he's eating, having enough dirty diapers, and gaining weight then he's completely fine

My baby is four weeks old and sleeps most of the time. I thought it was normal for them to do so, saving their energy for growing.

Our 6 week old sleeps a lot as well. As long as baby is gaining weight well I wouldn't be concerned!

My pediatrician said in the newborn stage (so up through 8 weeks) as long as they don't sleep more than 21 hours a day, eat 7 times minimum, and are having enough wet diapers they are fine. My son will be 8 weeks on Thursday and still sleeps a lot. Probably about 18-19 hours of the day.
