If you see visible scar(s) on someone, do you ask about them?

I have people ask me about the two little ones I have on my neck if they get up close to me a lot. I don't mind explaining, but I generally prefer not to ask or discuss scars unless it's brought up by the person who actually has them first as I find that many scars trigger bad memories that can quickly sour the mood of a conversation.

Do you ask about scars you see on others?
