From Friend to Boyfriend?

My friend just confessed that he has feelings for me.  We have been friends for almost 3 years and used to like each other when we first met (we were 16) but we were naive and nothing ever came of it. We went for drinks tonight, we were walking home together and he was quite upset; I asked him what's wrong and we had a deep chat. When he got home he text me telling me he likes me. I text him back telling him that I can't talk about this over text and definitely not when drunk. I do really like him but I don't know what to do if he brings this up tomorrow. I don't want to jeopardise our friendship. I am not very good at relationships at all and the last two have kind of ended in a disaster. Would it be okay for me to say to him that I don't want to 'date' officially but carry on as normal and see where it goes?
