Are oranges called oranges because they are orange, or because they are the color orange?

I vaguely remember having this discussion in biology my freshman year of high school lol..the color orange is named after the fruit orange. The English word orange came from a Spanish word(naranja? or something like that) which I believe means orange tree or something like that lol. So the fruit was in existence before the color had it's name....That's what I remember learning at least

I was thinking the other day, what if we called things carrot instead? 🤔 Carrot scarf, carrot traffic cone...

But I think orange is the fruit because orange juice itself isn't orange.
