fiancé doesn't want joint bank accounts... is this common?

Question

My fiancé and I will be getting married soon and we already have kids together. When we are married I suggested getting a joint bank account that way both our pays go in together we can open a savings as well as have all our debts come out of our accounts together.

He wants us to have a joint savings account but not a joint bank account because of the debts I got before we met (totalling maybe $3000 and his are $40,000). I just thought when you get married you share everything ...finances included.

Am I reading into this too much?

When my husband and I first moved in together we were too broke for separate accounts. All our money went for bills. Now after 14yrs together we definitely have more money we just never separated it. It's worked all these years why change it. But I do know people who keep the separate and never join the funds. I think whatever works for you two works. Don't read too much into it. Some people just prefer it that way

I think a joint account for bills & savings but separate accounts that your pay gets deposited in & you shop with etc.

My SO and I talk about getting one since we're expecting but have been too lazy too lol. I might just suggest a joint savings account because no matter what we spend our money together. My money is his and his money is mine, if he needs something I will give money and if I need something he will give me money. Anything that comes to baby or groceries or gas or anything like that we split right in half.

Not everyone gets a joint account. Some share everything, some have only one person bring money in, some have separate accounts for everything, it depends on the couple. I think he's just trying to look out for you but if it bothers you just talk to him. I think my fiancé and I are going to keep our separate accounts but add a joint account for bills and house stuff.  🤔

My husband and I have separate accounts.

I pay $500 for rent. He pays the rest (significantly more). I pay for meals out. He pays for groceries, errands and everyday expenses. I pay for big expenses like the wedding, vacations, etc. it works for us. We never fight about money. If he needs some cash, I'll give it to him. We share money but also don't? Idk it works for us

Where I live, entering a marriage is like entering a business partnership:EVERYTHING is 50/50. And that's honestly how it should be. No matter who makes the bigger paycheck, both of you should be involved in the family's finances.

My husband and I merged all accounts when be bought our house. We were together about 2.5 years and weren't even engaged yet. Having all the money together when bought the house just made things so much easier for that.

If you have a "what's mine is yours" mentality and are both working towards the same savings/life goals then having everything joint makes sense. I also really love the fact that we are able to see what the other is buying and hold each other accountable for silly purchases. It helps each of us to think twice before making that impulse purchase that we really want but don't really need.

We've been able to tighten up and contribute more to our 401ks, ira, stocks and refinance to a 15yr mortgage because of this and our net worth as a couple increases significantly every month. If we had separate accounts I don't believe any of that would be happening.

We have a joint savings and checking only because the main account is the business account. We also have a savings. I dont even know if its the same. Loll i just use that for whatever money he lets me transfer and use 😂 everything else stays in checking for bills and business
