Irregular periods, where to start for testing

I just need some feedback. I have always had irregular periods since the end of time for me (first period) we had lost our first 2 years ago. Now when i get mylate periods i dont know where to start to check if we are pregnant at home. What tests do i use at home? Whats an hcg test, do i use an ovulation test?....so many solutions but dont know where to begin
