rectal thermometer..?! 😟

Is that really necessary for a newborn? Can't I just get a forehead or ear one?

Rectal ones are far more accurate and my pediatrition will only trust a rectal temperature. So if I call and give them a temp that wasn't rectal, they don't acknowledge it

I am a medical assistant and they say it is not good to use an ear thermometer on a child less than 6 months of age. There ears are still rapidly developing and you can puncture an ear drum very easily. Rectal is always best and give the most accurate temperate because it tells you what you are internally. Remember add a degree unless you do take it rectally.

We have a forehead one & have only ever used a forehead one, we didnt see a need to use a rectal one either. It is very accurate too.

My pediatrician insisted we get one as that was the only thing they would accept as accurate. It's really not a big deal just get one.

I was told by my nurses and pediatrician not to use rectal. The ear thermometers are just as accurate so I'd suggest one of those.

I have both.  I have a really good ear thermometer for regular use. If the ear reading  is high enough that one degree matters (eg it's a really high fever) then I do a rectal. I have 3 kids ages 4 and under and have only done a rectal maybe 3 times ever.
