Sore nipple

So my newborn and I are still learning and she messed up my nipple. It's a little bent out of shape and tender. Not cracked or bleeding, so it's tolerable. Will it correct itself or do I need to stop feeding on that side for a while? I'm like a jersey cow, so I'm not worried about my supply. More worried about my nipple pain because I'm supposed to ween baby off of the nipple shield in about 2 weeks.
