Do I contact an attorney? I'm seeing you can do it online and it notarized but idk if I trust that lol we don't have children yet (working on it lol)

We have a Trust and we created it with an attorney. We used an attorney that was on our "free" list from my husbands work recommendations, and she did a fantastic job. We liked the idea of a Trust because there's no financial penalty to anyone left alive, and it covers everything from medical decisions, children, finances, etc. Also, it cannot be changed once one of us dies, so, for example, if my husband remarried after I died, his new wife would never be able to touch anything meant for our kids. We don't have children yet either, but we put our "future" children in our Trust by saying who would be responsible for them if we both died, how much money/assets they would each get (including restrictions that required them to graduate from a 4-year university and be a certain age before acquiring anything from our Trust). We also put all of our bank accounts into our Trust to make it a smooth transition without any penalty if one of us dies. There's also statements giving us each permission to pull the plug, so to speak, on the other in case of an extreme medical tragedy. Most of the couples I know have a Trust instead of a Will, but it's definitely a lot of work!

Hi! 👋 I do these for a living so I have some insight. 😀 You absolutely can order a Living Will online. There's a great one called "Five Wishes." And actually Office Depot sells Power of Attorney/Living Wills in their stores (at least in my state of SC, anyway). You will need to sign it in front of a notary, file it with your county clerk of court, and give a copy to your doctor (also a good idea to give a copy to a trusted friend or family member). Note that Living Wills are not the same as Wills - the MEDICAL advance directives can be done without a lawyer, but the FINANCIAL wills usually need legal intervention. Good for you for doing this, it's really important!!!!
