Losing Virginity

I am 16 years old, almost 17, and am discussing having sex with my boyfriend of 10 months. We both feel that we are ready, and this will be my first time. We want to take as many precautions as possible, however, I don't want to take any hormonal contraception and want the process to be as comfortable as possible. We have discussed using a  condom and adding spermicide, and me using a birth control sponge. Also, I am using this app to track my ovulation. Does anyone have any experience with using the birth control sponge or have any suggestions on further precautions?
