Starting on the pill

I am seeing my doctor tomorrow to begin taking birth control pills. (Unfortunately I don't know which right now) but I also leave for vacation this Friday. I am worried about the earliest symptoms/ bleeding to start while I'm on vacation. Did any of you experience heavy bleeding immediately after starting the pill? Or any other uncomfortable symptoms during this first week? Should I wait until I get home?
