This was my abdominal ultrasound at 11 weeks. As you can see it's pretty clear. Ps. She hasn't got a beak she was rubbing her nose 😂

I didn't have a single transvaginal US this pregnancy, and my first US was at 8 weeks!

Usually at as early as week 11 mostly transvaginal US is done. The fetus is not quite developed yet at this stage. So it's easier to perform the screening vaginally. But it depends on your doc as well. Your GP or Gynecologist will better advise you based on your situation. 

In my experience it seems they only do Transvaginal if your really early in pregnancy or if they have a hard time seeing the baby doing abdominal. Mostly it's abdominal 

I had abdominal at 6w5d and at 10w and at 10w it was super clear seeing baby abdominally !

At 12 I have abdominal and at 8 weeks I had trabsvag. I don't know which is better, tranvag is more magnified I think, which is why that's what's used early.
