Miscarriage- Meds or Surgery?

Question

Going through miscarriage at the moment. Was first time TTC in my 30's and conceived after only 3 months. Sadly 7 week scan showed slow development and slow heart rate. HCG not doubling and scan at 8 weeks showed no heartbeat and no further development. Light bleeding for a week now and had meds inserted in vagina today to bring on miscarriage. Another appointment in 3 days to discuss if further meds or D&C will be needed. 
Would love to hear others' stories of either procedure and whether people have been successful next time round. Would like to avoid the surgical procedure but at the same time would like to move on and try again before too long. Feeling heartbroken and confused and would love to hear from others x

We lost our first baby a week ago at 8 weeks but baby had stopped growing at 6 1/2. I decided to take misoprostol to make the miscarriage happen more quickly as I wanted to get it over with. I had my follow up ultrasound today to see if everything had passed (a week after taking the drugs) and I still have some placental tissue in there so my doctor gave me a second round of it to take to pass the rest. I have another ultrasound scheduled a week from now and I'm really hating that I have to do a second round of this since it was very painful for me. I wanted to avoid a D&C but now I'm sort of regretting not just doing it last week as it would have been over now and this way I am still dealing with it. Hoping after these 2 rounds of misoprostol that I don't end up needing the D&C anyways. I'm very sorry for your loss, this is such a horrible experience to go through.

I found out Monday we had a loss at a routine ultrasound - 9 weeks and no signs of miscarriage.  I went back today for a confirmation and had a d and c right afterwards.  The experience was the best of a bad situation.  I would definitely do it again if we are ever faced with a loss again.

You've already started taking the medication, so I don't know if there is much you could do to change the course.  I believe there is a lot of bleeding and pain involved.  Not telling to scare you, but I think it might be good to be prepared.  I've had 2 friends choose to have their miscarriage at home, and after hearing their experience, I chose the d and c for me.  Prayers that you pass everything smoothly.

I am sorry for your loss. I lost mine in March. I bled for almost 12 hours. I was in labor for almost 12 hours and although I passes my baby I wouldnt stop bleeding. I ended up getting a D&C. I dont think I could go through the pain and bleeding at home. I am glad it was at the hospital. The D&C was honestly the easiest part of it all. It was almost like I was forced to sleep after so mucb trauma. We havet started ttc though.

Thanks Channel and Jessica. I took the meds yesterday and had bleeding and cramping for about 8 hours but nothing like I expected and nothing over night so a little worried it hasn't worked (though I had already been bleeding for a week). I have a follow up on Mon so possibly more meds or will be booked in for D&C for Thursday (they only do them once a week at my hospital). Good to hear from you that the surgery is not too bad. So sorry for your losses. This really is the hardest time. Xxx

I'm sorry for your loss. I just had the D&C Tuesday. I was too scared to try the meds and go through that at home. I had a prior miscarriage when I was 19 and it was very painful and scary. The surgery was easier for me. Hospital staff was very nice and understanding. I did have some cramping pain when I woke up that really hurt but after pain meds I felt much better.

I am so sorry for your loss! I think you already started the meds, but thought I'd give my perspective. After seeing my baby's heartbeat during my 7 week scan, the 9 weeks ultrasound showed no growth or heartbeat. Followed up the next week and it was confirmed that I had a missed miscarriage. I went with the D&C because I wasn't showing any signs of miscarrying and I had to have a cyst removed anyway. I had no issues with it. Didn't bleed very much, only spotting for a couple of days. I'm about 10 days post op and everything seems to be heading back to normal. I think I may ovulate soon because my CM looks fertile, though it seems a little quick. I still don't have much experience but the surgery wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The emotional healing is much slower to come.

I had the meds and it was absolutely horrible. So sick, shaky, cold, then cramps and heavy bleeding all night. Still ended up needing the d&c anyways and it was honestly so easy. I'd go straight to the d&c if I had to do it again. Quick, little recovery and it ended the nightmare that was my week prior.
