The instructions have confused me. They make it seem like if the test line is not as dark as the control line, then it's negative. My question is, why have a line at all if it's negative?

They're diff than pregnancy tests. Faint lines means negative.

It's measuring the LH level, and you always have some in your system, that's why there is usually a second line.  The key is looking for a surge, or increase, hence a dark second line.  Your test is negative.

That's negative. The test line must be as dark as or darker than the control. You'll almost always have a 2nd line since there is always lh hormones in your system.
