Library troubles
Hi!
I'm 22 years old and have autism and some mild retardation, anxitey, ptsd, and depresion, and vocal cord dysfunction, ear problems, and asmtha.
I was dignosed late and the school system I went to was not helpful (they would not test me for autism despite my IQ being 74 note: An IQ between 50 and 75. At this level of intelligence, they generally cannot complete post high school. Most adults will need smarter help in coping with the world) I was bullied and also raped and my school did nothing- my special ed teacher went as far as to tell me it was my fault i was assulted. But through my parents and my now loving boyfriend i survied and thrived.
It was hard to get a job and my life has been hard with having my disbilty and my other probles.
I've dealt with all sorts of people. School officals not wanting to do a thing, bullies, people who don't or won't understand autism can come in a arry of colors and just becuase I can spell and read very well does not mean I do not have autism and some mild retardation. I've dealt with abuse from so called "friends".
I finally got my dream job. I work in a library! It's only part time, but i love it. It quite. It not chotic. The pattern of the day is usaly the same. It a perfect fit for me. I've made bonds there.
But libraries are in danger of closing. Some have already. Some may lose their funding that provide activites (pre-school/library school, book clubs, hosting authors, being able to loan materils from other libraries.
Libraries not only provide media and books but they are a source that provide a place for kids to go in the summer, after school, and a place to do hw. A place someone could use a computer that doesn't have one. Infomation about the town and outlaying comunties. A center for the old to go and be in a good place to meet or enjoy time. It also saves money.
So please, even if you don't enjoy reading please support your commuity library and their workers. Some who are just like me or older people who want to keep busy or just normal every day folk.
Donante money, contact your goverment, donate used books and media. Volunteer. Go to town meetings or friend of the library meetings. Speak up. Even visting can help!
Thank you,
To a very proud librarian
