when does the birth control pill become effective?

I started taking alesse 28 a month ago, and I started my period yesterday, so I'm just finishing up my first pack. I had heard that they are effective a week after starting them, and I had unprotected sex with my BF today, but he pulled out... since I'm on the sugar pills now and it's been a month, am I safe?
