Tatoo/Piercing, society lacks of intellectual differentiation?

Something is on my mind and I am maybe too old fashioned. Though I do find it a bit sexy sometimes to see a tatoo. 
But hasn't our society pushed so much into appearance in addition to lack of intellectual prowness (creativity, success,...) that people just use petty differention such as tattoos and piercing to differentiate and attract others?

Using tattoos, pericings, body decoration, and makeup/hair/clothes to attract people is not unique to our culture in any way. People have been doing tattoos and body decor since the stone ages

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't dreaming up a tattoo that's uniquely personal and collaborating with an artist to bring it to life on your skin inherently creative?
