Breast milk cooler

Courtnie • 28. Happily married. I'm a mom of Angel baby boy👼, a rainbow baby girl🌈, and my surprise pot of gold baby boy 🍀

Hey ladies. I go back to work in a few weeks. I will be pumping at work and need some reccomendatioms on ideas for coolers.

Are you guys using a lunchbox or actually bought a cooler specifically made for storage?

I also need something that will keep the milk cool of not frozen for several hours. I'm in the medical field and work long days.

Any advice??

I use a pack-it with two freezer packs inside.  I can work my 9 hour shift (with an hour to and from work) and my milk is cold when I get off and the ice packs still party frozen.

My breast pump came with one, but I did see one at Babies R Us that came with ice packs too!

Medela sell a cooler bag made specifically for bottles (the ice pack is curved to fit them and the bag is insulated) but would there be any possibility of buying a mini fridge? It would keep the milk better and you can use the cooler for transport.

I looked a bit into the mini fridges. There are some tiny ones that can be plugged in the wall socket and even used in the car. There are many options on Amazon and they're not expensive. I was even thinking of getting one for when I got back to work next month instead of using the staff room fridge

Well Medela say that you can keep milk in a cooler for 24 hrs so you might be ok.

unfortunately not, but maybe I can keep in there and try to run home on my lunch breaks. Thank you!

I believe these guidelines are still current

I pump at work and use the medela brand bottle cooler. It came with more bottles and the ice pack is specifically designed to go with the bottles.

The milk must be stored below 41°F.

previously frozen breastmilk can be kept in the fridge up to 24 hours after its done thawing.

Thanks. I generally treat thawed milk like formula and discard it the same day. I haven't returned to work yet so I only pump occasionally and last time I pumped at work was 6 years ago with #1 so I don't recall all the rules.

8-10 hours above 41°F would be unsafe to them refrigerate and use later as it would grow bacteria and you cannot boil breastmilk to kill bacteria. if you want to freeze milk after it was refrigerated for 2-3 days you'd have to clearly mark the bag to bre used within 1-2 days of thawing. if your refrigerator is partially freezing the milk...check your controls and also move food in the freezer to allow the freezer to breathe and freeze properly. you have to treat the milk in the fridge as refrigerated not frozen so it should be used within 3-5 days.
