Cervidil induction at 39w 3d
At the end of my pregnancy I imagined every possible labor scenario and read hunderts of birth stories online, so I thought I should share my story as well to help other women to ease their concerns.
When I went to my regular weekly check with my OB at 39w 3d he did an ultrasound after examining me and told me I didn't have enough amniotic fluid left and that he would like to induce me the same day to avoid any possible complications. The last thing I wanted and the thing I was most scared of was an induction because of all the horrible stories I read and heard from friends. But until this point my pregnancy had been as easy and uneventful as anyone can hope for and I definitively wasn't going to take any risk, so I agreed to the induction.
I went back home, showered, had lunch with hubby and we arrived at the hospital at 3pm. At 4pm they placed Cervidil inside, a medicine that looks similar to a tampon and can be taken out at any time, and told me this needs to stay in for 12 hours to soften my cervix and after that they would give me Oxytocin to start labor. I was only 1cm at this time and cervix still high and hard, so they wanted to take it slow and told me it would be about 36 hours until I would finally meet my baby girl.
Well, at 10pm the same night I started having real bad contractions, at midnight my water broke and they took out the Cervidiol and by 3am I was already 7cm and they were in a rush to get the epidural in. The pain was horrible at this point and when they got the epidural in I really expected relief, but surprisingly didn't get any! An hour after I was still screaming in pain so they decided to place another epidural at 4:30am and I finally felt good and numb at 5am. At this point they checked me again and I was 10cm dilated, but couldn't push because I couldn't feel anything at all. So I rested for a while we waited until 7:30am for the epidural to wear off a little bit to start pushing. The doctor needed to cut me twice and at 8:27am my beautiful baby girl was born, happy and healthy!!!
The doctor said apparently my body was ready to give birth and just needed a little push. We went home the day after and since then our little princess has been the greatest joy of our lives! She's now a little over 2 month and has already grown over 4 inches and almost doubled her birth weight! So don't be scared if your doctor talks about induction, it can work out just fine and in the end it's always worth it!!! And for epidurals, well, it can go wrong as well and the afterpain is something nobody talks about, but I don't know if I could have done it without it and I'm glad everything went the way it did.
