Does SIDS exist? What is your take on it?

Hope this topic isn't too debatable. I have mixed feelings about SIDS.

Well it exists. It's definitely a terrible thing that happens. From what I know, there's no way to 100 percent prevent it from happening but there are things they say reduce the risk of it such as back is best while baby sleeps, no blankets or pillows in sleeping area, sleeping in same room as parents etc.

I'm TERRIFIED of SIDS. It's to the point we still sleep in shifts because I'm so afraid he'll stop breathing for no reason.

Of course it exists... I don't know how that's even a question? Hundreds of babies die from it every year.

It's rare but it does exist. No one knows the exact cause but there are some practices that were found to reduce the risk. The AAP published new guidelines about SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths last October I think. You can read the whole thing online in the pediatrics journal or the AAP & healthchildren.org websites if you prefer less technical language.

I am terrified of SIDS im constantly checking on my baby to make sure she's breathing...I can't ever sleep at ease I can't wait until this phase is over..my doctor mentioned that SIDS spikes up in fatalities at this age 3-6months :(  UGH! 😩

You're joking right? Yes. I mean the baby could have a heart or lung or other defects but it's still sids if the baby died suddenly. You can't just be like I don't believe in sids...

It's definitely real. My doctors daughter put her son down for a nap, went to check on him since he was sleeping so long, and he was dead. She never went back into that house. It's horrible but I try not to worry too much. I do check on my daughter but I don't let the fear consume me.

It is absolutely a real and horrible thing! My mom's cousin died of SIDS back in the 70's and an L&D nurse she worked with lost her baby to it as well in the 90's. Now with back to sleep the incidence has decreased greatly but it still happens. It freaks me out but I can't dwell on it too much or if never sleep. The best that we can do is follow the AAP's recs and practice safe sleep practices.
