Father's Day present

I'm buying my oh a present from his son (my step son) because I know his sons mother won't get him anything this year (because he took her to court to be on birth certificate and to get set days) I planned on getting him something with dad on it or something cheapish. I've no problem with buying him expensive stuff but I only get paid 250 this week and 100 towards rent and the rest to do me for a week. I asked him to give me ideas and he chose a pair of trainers at £50. My problem is that on my birthday he got me a cake, Christmas he got me a necklace at £10 and Mother's Day he got me nothing from his son what so ever on any of the holidays. Is it harsh if I just hand him something like aftershave or maybe a canvas of me, him and his son?
