Thoughts on Daddy/Daughter Dances or Mother/Son Dances or activities like that?

It's an idea rooted in good intentions, but the nuclear family has dissolved in today's society. A lot of kids don't have one parent active in their life at all, or they have a step parent, or their parent has a boyfriend/girlfriend. And let's not forget same sex couples and their children.

It's not something I'd do as I'm not very close to my family but I totally support others doing it. It's a fun activity.

my final answer just depends on whether or not the event unnecessarily draws attention to those who don't have stable/good home lives. 
I personally dislike when schools have the "bring your mom to lunch" day or "father/daughter" dances that are during school hours because it always singles out the kids who don't have as great of a family life as others or just don't have family in their life at all. When they're out of school hours or are optional activities provided elsewhere, I think they're great and fun.

But I always dreaded the dances and lunches at school because people would always ask where my parents were and it's no fun explaining at age 8 to your friends that you have drug/alcohol addicted parents. Kids are accepting but it's still stressful to sit alone while they dance/eat with their parents. If they had been outside of school hours I would've felt much better along with several other children.

I don't see the problem with them at all. I loved going to stuff like that with my dad and my school had mother-daughter and father-son things as well which were great. In mine and one of my brother's classes there were a couple kids that didn't have a mum/dad and they'd just bring their parent. No one cared. Kids tend to be the accepting ones and it's the parents that have the problem. I was really good friends with this girl in my class who's dad had died when she was 6. We were 10 and had a father-daughter formal brunch at the school and I remember her being a bit sad that her dad wasn't there, but her mum always came and no one in our class minded at all. She had a lot of fun- we sat at the same table and my dad and the other dad's at our table didn't care and talked to her mum just like she was another parent (because she was).

I dunno  its such  a cute  idea, but what about a daughter  that  has no father(or  not able to attend)? Or a son that has no mother (or no able to attend)?  Ive seen the whole  mother  dress like a guy and vice versa, It would  break my heart  seeing  a child in that situation and feeling  left out.

My girlfriend went with her nephew to his mommy don thing. His mom left when he was a baby but he can still enjoy those types of activites

I personally never liked dances, but if my son wanted to go to one, then I would go. My child's happiness is what matters when they're here and if that's what would make them happy, then I'll do it.

I think they're great. My school didn't have things like that. We had more things for students to do with each other. Idk if it was because majority of the parents worked full time or if a good portion of the students were from single parent families but it would have been cool to have something like that with my parents. My cousins schools had things like that but for some reason my schools pta was shit

I don't have a daughter, but I think my heart would explode if I saw her all dressed up going to a little dance with her daddy.
