Is she wrong?

Question

Last night my mom told me that I'm her and my dad's responsibility until I get married but I don't want to get married like it's not a priority for me and the way she said it made it seem like I'm some kind of property that has to remain untouched until I'm given to a man. Is it bad that I'm mad about this or do you think she meant it harmlessly? She was yelling at me about how I'm not allowed to hang out with guys.

BTW I'm 18

It's something that some parents say. The way you understood it though is a prime example of how women are still not equal in this country. Do you think she would have said that if you were a man? Me being the snot I am, I would have answered back with exactly what you stated here and waited for their retort.

You are 18 and therefore an adult. However, if you are living at home and financially dependent on Mom and Dad, than you have to play by their rules. This is one of the many reasons I left at 17 after high school and never looked back. My Mom told me I would fall flat on my face and come crawling home. Probably the best thing she could say because you bet your ass I didn't!

If you want to be seen as a strong independent woman who can care for herself, then you need to be one. Get a job and start saving for a future where you support yourself.

My parents are traditional and thought that way. Now that I am a mom myself I understand that they were just worried about my well being and that I would be taken care of. Of course I can take care of myself but I'm sure for them they just wanted reassurance that someone else could take care of me if something were to happen to me. Don't take it to seriously they just love you and want the best for you. Sometimes the best thing to is nod and move on.

That would piss me off a bit too.. You are not property, and you shouldn't feel pressured into getting married simply so you aren't their "responsibility" anymore. If you are able to, get you a job and start saving money. The moment you can support yourself, they can no longer tell you what you can or cannot do.
