Do people ever throw their own baby shower?

Sure. If no one steps up to the plate to plan one, then throw your own. You deserve to have a baby shower and celebrate your new baby, no matter if "etiquette" says it's totally proper or not.

I did.  My family wasn't local and friends didn't have time or money.  I spent about $2500 on the shower and did DIY decor and favors for all my guests.  It was fun and I explicitly told people gifts were NOT required as I really just wanted to celebrate.

Etiquette states that it's usually thrown by a family member or close friend.  It's to shower you and your new baby with gifts.  Would look a little gift grabby if you threw one for yourself.
